In the narrow lanes of the main city of Jaisalmer, lies the magnificent Patwon-Ki-Haveli, a grandiose yellow sandstone architecture known for its pretty paintings, intricate carvings. A haveli is a traditional townhouse, mansion, manor, palace or fort in the Indian subcontinent, usually one with historical and architectural significance. Situated near the Patwa valley, the entire haveli complex is a cluster of five smaller havelis. The first among these havelis was commissioned and constructed in 1805 by Guman Chand Patwa, a wealthy brocade merchant and jeweler. The 5 mansions were constructed for 5 Patwa brothers. There are a few paintings and mirror artwork that adorns the inside walls of this grand mansion. To cater to the visitors interested in the rich cultural history of the area, one of the sections has been converted into a museum that houses several artefacts from the early 19th century. The hardwork and aesthetic skills of the local Rajasthani craftsmen can be seen in every corner of this haveli in the individual depictions and theme on each and every arch.
